This is for those who have not read about my rather unusual (and drastic) solution to clearing a P0015. CMP sensor malfunction.

This pertains only when you are sure that the vehicle is running properly, all wiring has been checked, and the engine oil is clean and of the proper viscosity rating.

Try adding a pint of a product called "Seafoam" to the engine (in the crankcase - not the air intake). Let it circulate with the oil for a week or so. Then change the oil and filter as normal and clear the code.

It may stay cleared. My wife's 2004 S40 had a nagging 0015 that I was fairly certain was being caused by some debris or sludge at the interface between the CMP and the camshaft. I did the above procedure - after trying everthing else I could do, other than change the sensor. It's been two weeks now with no CEL.

She is happy, the system is flushed, and there have been no seal leaks at this point.

I have no interest, financial or otherwise in this product (Seafoam), and actually have only recently become aware of it. But it seemed to do the trick.

i've done the seafoam through the intake on R #1 and in the gas tank on R #2. both did a hell of a good job. lots of smoke, though. funny as all hell. especially when i figured i would drive it on the highway to help the smoke get out faster. man, nothing like watching a lot of people get out of your way when you blast past them, turbo full boost, and a plume of smoke shooting out the rear. i literally pulled over and laughed my butt off. nothing like living the greek way. all or nothing.

sounds like your car has varible valve timing and you have had a problem with this system. Old oil and dirty vvt valve or hub would cause this fault as all rely on good oil to operate correctly. I dont like fuel additives as not likely to cure 90% of any original running problems (if any) but the stuff i think you put in a engine oil to break down old oil before you change it does work in situations like this sometimes.

raydar,

For the full background on this issue check a thread entitled: quote - ArrowLight - end quote. Don't ask me why I posted the results of this experiment there - probably searched for trouble code or something similar.

My contribution addresses some of your concerns and may help you understand why I used this particular product (in the lube oil system - not in the fuel system) only as a last resort.
