Hello I have a 1997 960 with 200k miles. a/c system is charged and blows 40 deg f air. My problem is when the car is started the ac clutch wont engage. I have to click the ignition foward and back four to five times (with out starting), then the ac clutch will ingage. What should I look at to fix this problem? I am a diesle mechanic so any help with this problem would be appreciated.

The clutch wont engage straight away. Start the engine and wait it should engage after 30 secs or so. If you wish to check it quickly have the temp. set to cold however it will still not start for a few seconds. (make sure your AC is switched on
of course). BTW climate control works without the AC it is a separate system.

There is an "Air Gap" between the ac clutch and the compressor that has to be adjusted but unfortunately i cant give you a link on how to do it as the Volvo UK forum is temporary closed

What measurement is the air gap? I'm sure the gap is good. Because I can see the voltage at the clutch controll come on in the first thirty seconds then it goes away just as quick. For some reason the only time I can get the clutch to stay engaged is to cycle the ignition 6-8 times then start the car. I'm at a loss I have also replaced the pressure switch, checked the freon level, relay, and fuses. the only thing left that I can think of is the auto controlls, I would hate to tare apart the dash to find out that the controlls are not the fault. Any further ideas are always appreciated, I realy dont wont to tare apart the dash! Thanks to all who have posted!

I think you will have to take a look at the control unit.
It is not such a bug job to take it out of the dash if you know how.
Many of the A/C problems are caused by it's bad soldering reputation.
