My daughter has a '93 940 Turbo sedan that I've been helping her with. Recently her radiator gave out. In the process coolant and transmission fluid got mixed and we originally thought she lost the tranny. After my garage replaced the radiator, they flushed the trans. They told me that coolant in the trans fluid can cause all kinds of symptons. They were right. After the flushing, the trans works but with a few quirks. In the morning, the trans will not shift out of 1st. for about 30 seconds and only after taking it up to 4000 - 4500 rpm. Then most of the time it starts out in second gear. Other than that it runs fine. I know the garage did check the linkage. They put some kind of treatment product in the trans and told us to drive it for a few days. The hope is that the coolant may have caused a valve in the trans. to stick. Well, the few days are up and it still does it. Anyone out there ever have a similar problem?

Any help appreciated, Thanks, Ron

it might not have been the anti-freeze. on the older volvos, if the tranny is flushed with pressure, it kicks up all the crud that collects in there over the years. so the little bits get stuck where they are not supposed to be. try going to one of those jiffy lube-ish places. talk to the service manager, tell him you need the tranny flushed but with gravity. they will have to fill and empty, twice. that way it will flush it out without force. obviously you will be wasting fluid, but hey, when was the last time you changed the oil in the tranny? it's supposed to be a lifetime fluid. anyway, when you are doing this, use a straight synthetic, not a semi synthetic. you would be surprised at the myriad of little niggling annoyances that a full synthetic can clear up. hopefully this will help you out. keep us posted.
