please could anyone help, i have a 1995 volvo 440 1.8i automatic, sometimes when i turn the ignition key there is no response, all the relevant lights come on the dashboard.
to rectify this i got to shift the automatic gear stick to the L position then back to the P position then the engine starts.
this is ok since i know how to get it started, but i got m.o.t. this week and the garage will sure fail it because intermitant start up.

has anyone had the same fault and what can be done to fix this

please could any kind volvo owner help

I am guessing its the park position sensor switch, thats a bit sticky, Not sure as I havent had an automatic version of the 440.

thanks very much for that, does anyone know how to get at this parking sensor switch as i dont have a haynes manual as yet.
i wish there was a downloadable haynes manual for free, hehe

your correct kind sir, it was indeed a sticky switch, i gave it a good clean and back to normal.

people should note that when trying to locate the starter inhibitor switch on a 440 automatic you will not find it where the haynes manual directs you, it is located underneath the automatic gearbox and not as shown in book on side of automatic transmission
