SO,

Found this car at a local car lot 87 240 DL, marked $950.00, well i bargained and got it for $850 out the door!

The car is southern, as there isnt a spot of rust on the car anywhere, even the underneath is CLEAN.

Its Maroon with the tan interior, most of which ive converted to black. The cars odometer says 156K, but as far back as 2006 the registrations say the same number, who knows, prolly right around 200K or under now.

The car is in decent shape, but whoever owned it before hooked up a push button start to it. I looked at the shifter when i got home, and saw the shifter wasnt connected to the start lock switch. I took apart and refitted, problem solved!

I also cleaned the intake- Pulled and cleaned Air Mass Meter, throttle body, AND the flame trap. That was caked, definatly clogged, and it may have caused a couple drips of oil from sitting over night-maybe size of quarter in the morning, it seems to come from in between the trans pan and oil pan.........any thoughts??

i checked injector seals with starter fluid, none sucked any in around the injectors, seals are good!

Car smells like its running rich, but theres an exhaust leak in the pipe before the cat, NOT the header or downpipe. Seems like rich smell coming from leak, exhaust from tailpipe smells less rich.

Id like some advice what I should do to do a tuneup, I plan on replacing spark plugs, rotor, etc........I'd liek to continue to clean things out that need attention ona car with no service history and 200K. Car runs great tho, ok on gas, think could be better.

Sounds like a pretty good buy. Congrats.

With no service history. the timing belt probably needs replacement.

You may have an issue with the O2 sensor. Running rich and exhaust leak. You got smog checks in OH?

I would do a tranny fluid flush (but not drop the pan), DOT4 fluid flush, and coolant flush.

I agree the oil leak may be from the main rear crank seal. But you may have fixed it by cleaning the flame trap. The oil breather box could be plugged up. Did you try blowing through the hose on top of the breather box?

Sounds good,

The timing best was replaced by volvo at 120K, what are the intervals for the change?

Also, whats the best way to gain access to the breather box, taking everything above it off?

Thanks

Timing belt should be changed every 50000 miles.

If the flame trap sits high (relocated) as in later 240s, you're fat. Pull the flame trap housing off the hose and blow. But if the flame trap is buried under the intake manifold, as on mine, it's somewhat awkward. Remove dissy cap and rotor. Reach in with your left hand and grab the flame trap housing, pull up. From above, guide a 12" length of 1/2" hose onto the nipple on the oil breather box. You can use a 3/8" ratchet extension or dowel insert to stiffen the hose while you guide it. Once you get the hose on, blow and see if air passes through the breather box or if it's plugged up.

If the breather box is plugged (likely) then the best bet is to pull the throttle body and idle air controller in order to unbolt and remove the oil breather box for cleaning. Naturally removing the intake manifold makes it very accessible, but I'd rather not remove the intake manifold if possible.

Markey is right about the 50k service interval for timing belt.

boooo

well i cleaned the flame trap, and the throttle body, now i gotta take it off again to get the oil breather box off!

well its warming up here in ohio, so the first fine day i have off work and class ill get to it!......so if i blow into the breather box, i will be able to easily blow air into it......if its clogged up, it will be obvious? yes?

Regards
