Hi,

Managed to find diagnostic codes for my 440, but was curious what the numbers on the actual diagnostic unit refer to.
The site i pulled the codes from (for 89'-93' model 440's) said #2 was 'Fuel Codes'.
But on my 95' model, it seems to be #1 for the same, unless i'm reading it wrong.

Can anyone tell me what the numbers 1-7 on the box refer to in terms of problem diagnostics.

Mine came up with 2-2-1 in #1 socket, so i'm guessing it's the oxygen sensor, as rev's are higher than norm (actual description says Heated Oxygen Sensor (Rich mixture/part throttle).
Please feel free to call me a dufus, but what does the part throttle bit mean?
I was guessing it's a rich mix, as fuel economy has gone through the floor of late.

Plus, i could only get the codes to work once, tried again a little while ago to re-check and got nothing. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help.

Oh, for those who don't have the codes list, you can find it here...

Yeah getting the codes out can be fiddley, from your description, and the bad fuel economy combined with the code it does sound like the oxygen sensor, I have replaced mine in the past, I used a cheap replacement and that lasted about a year, the volvo replacement I got after that has lasted a few years (and 2 cars) since, so maybe the volvo ones are better quality.

try fcpgroton.com for the part. a **** lot cheaper than the dealer. yes part throttle means just that, part throttle. not floored, halfway. you are running rich, too much gas for the position of your pedal. like turning on the faucet in your sink to get a drink of water, the water comes blasting out like a raging flood. that is what you injectors are doing.

Thanks for the help guys.

I punted for a generic 'cheapy' 3 wire Lambada for now (ebay £11.50) just to make sure it's an oxygen sensor problem, will replace it when it goes with a more reliable model if that turns out to be what's wrong.
It's one of those 'splice into the system' kits, so i'm guessing it's straight-forward, two wires to 'heater' and one to 'system/signal'.

Yeah, i figured 'part throttle' was what you described, but was confused, cos' the car was just ideling/ ticking over when the diagnostic came up with that. Hope it saves some fuel if nothing else :)

Cheers for the web-site heads up, have been using partsforvolvo.com for most the bits i need, not to expensive, but some things (idle control valve) seem to be way over priced.

Thanks again.

Hi Megalithica

i'm sure the answer is yes but have you tried clearing the codes and re testing and have you done them on a hot & cold engine?

volvo diagnostics tells you what socket is for what?
If you have an immobiliser you have to unlock on the fob before you turn the ignition on otherwise you will get nothing from diagnostics sockets

just trying to save you spending loads!!!!

cheers

I always test with the ignition on and the engine off.

Sorry have just reread your post

I have a '95 440 and you could be barking up the wrong tree fella

Socket 1 is the alarm & immobiliser
a 2-2-1 code = Fuse or ground terminal (locking)
I have this code stored also as the alarm needs resetting.
(Does your red led flash continuously with the engine running?)

Socket 2 fuel codes
Socket 4 ABS
Socket 6 cruise control
Socket 7 SRS

This is why I suggest clearing the codes first as per my link and also testing the engine both hot & cold as the codes may change.

Also as mentioned dont forget to activate the immobiliser before you turn the ignition on as like you experienced you will get no codes

check the link as its for the later models volvo diagnostics

cheers BD

Hi there

just found your thread,

I have a temp gauge problem (its on all the time)and wondered if the fault has been held in the car management system. I want to try and clear out the fault codes held. What diags unit are you using if any? Whats the easiest way to clear the db of codes held?

Much appreciated if you can help me.

Mike

Hi again

please ignore previous message, I went and had a look under the bonnet following the instructions and all became clear. A useful little unit all cars should have.

Has anyone heard for this problem with my 1994 440 SE:

My temp light is perminately on, and the temp gauge is always high. I have removed thermostat, flushed cooling system though throughly, preplaced temp sensor with new one, fan kicks in ok appropriately. I have driven 50 mile round trips with four passengers and had no cooling problems so cooling system itself is working fine.

I have checked (thanks to this thread) the codes, socket 2 responds with 1-1-1, socket 7 responds 1-1-1, there is no response from socket 3 though. Only these three sockets are wired.

The light came on and gauge rose to the top and stayed on about a week ago when I switched the ignition key to step 2 and not turning over the engine.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike

socket 3 is ABS if you dont have it it wont throw out any codes. (I think I typo'd my previous post but if you check the link it is socket 3. )
My car had this problem with the previous owner but was resolved by new sender/sensor slim chance but could the replacement could be faulty...?
