Hi all, I am a new member to this forum. Can anyone tell me how to make the fuel gauge of my 1990 Volvo GLE to work? Most of the time the needle stays at the zero mark, even after tank filled with gasoline. It will show the fuel level for a while then goes back to zero. There is no pattern to the on off behavior. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

Look in the boot and source the wiring to the sender unit. There will be a multi plug there somewhere. There will be a live and earth to the fuel pump then two other wires. These will be for the sender unit.

Pull the multi plug apart then check for resistance between the two wires to the sender unit.

To be honest mate, your lucky the fuel gauge works at all! 90% of 740s on the road have a duff fuel gauge.

If you are getting a resistance value at the sender unit that changes as you add and remove fuel then it will be the gauge on the dashboard that is at fault.

If you try and source a replacement dash-gauge from a breakers then the chances are that it will be duff too.

Good luck

open the trunk, and at the rear of it by the back of the seats, remove the carpet, and there is a black(i think) metal plate secured by 4 goldish looking bolts. Undo these and remove the plate, you should then see the sender/in tank pump assembly poking out the back of the tank.

I think the sender wire is black and white. I knwo in my 740, the position of the fuel gauge relies hevily at when gear i am in ... hard one to figure.

mine is a 2 litre auto and i can get roughly 250 miles out of my 13gallon tank.

The problem lies in the position of the fuel pump assembly. Sometimes the fuel pump module (assembly) moves from its original position and causes the fuel pick-up tube n float to face side ways, thus not allowing the float to register correctly. To repair it, simply loosen the fuel pump assembly hold-down clamp and reposition the fuel pump assembly. There are markings on the side of the assembly that match with markings on the fuel tank. The marking look like this: < and >.
