Check the fuses first. I've had muliple fuses blow on my ride many times. I know I had short recently that affected multiple tail lights at the rear...turns out the seat belt had a short and caused the fuse to blow. I currently have an amusing short in the passenger side sun visor. If someone puts it down (to keep the sun out of their eyes), it blows out the fuse, which controls my radio too. All my friends know not to put the visor down because if they do and fuse blows, they get to reprogram my radio which is a pain (not OEM). I provide complimentary sun glasses to my passenger instead!

Check the fuses first then the relays. I bet he had a fuse or two blow. Replace and then if it happens again, trace it back to the fuse box. Good luck.
