I drive a 1988 volvo 760 gle v6. My problem is that in the middle of driving and without warning the car will just shut off. I don't have any problems starting it and driving again. If anyone is familiar with the reason as to why this occurs please advise.

this may not apply to you as i have the 4 cylinder b200 engine. There is a chip made by bosch called an ignition amplifier ... this was my problem - exactly what your describing. i spent far too much on trying to find the problem (i really do love my brick) and in the end this part cost me like £10 ... prob bout $20us

its on the ipdusa website under electrical ignition...

Maybe an air fuel sensor as they are designed to shut of the fuel if the engine runs to lean. With the 850 turbo if I booted it and had the turbo wound up to say 15 psi the engine would just shut down as the computer shuts it down so as to not damaged the engine ie melt pistons

cool. glad it helped.

Just a bit more info for those who would like to know. These chips are usually located (on non turbo cars) as you look at the engien on the side of the washer bottle and airbox. you will have to remix the air box to reach it. it is held onto the body with 2 screws. unclip the cable unscrew it and it will pull off gently with a load of white heat sink compound.

This particular chip/amplifier usually gets iffy around 150k miles and will give symptoms of what you had described. The reason that i found (and tested) is because of heat. It is attached to a heatsink in turn attached to the grounded car body. On the back of the chip is a metal plate which with the heat sink compound creates a thermo (?) type bond for the transfer of heat.

this white paste also acts like an insulator. Heat degrades the compound over a long time (more the 150k if your thinking it is this)... When the unit plays up its because of an internal breakdown in the transistors inside. these will then short out to earth causing no spark signal switch to the coil. hence the engien cutting out.

It can start off like a misfire like mine did to complete random interval engine stop.

This random interval can be any amount of heat building up in the engine bay - i found usually coming to a stop when blasting it around, and heating the chip up causing it to short out internally.

In all hoenstly, i practyically had the engien and gearbox rebuilt thinking it wasn't something like this ... then when it stopped working i read something about it in my haynes manual just browsing and i went to the scrappy got one of a totalled 740 with 79k on the clock (one huge - REALLY HUGE tree i presume) put it in, fired up straight away. no problems then on.
