Hi, I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I discovered this forum on Google, I am trying to figure out how to wire up the stereo in my 1986 Volvo 740. factory amp, trying to see if I can just run my new stereo to the amp using the exsisting wires, etc, etc. :)

Thanks for any help and your forum is very useful. :liebe011:

i dont know if the wire colours are the same in yours as my euro 740se but its prob worth some info input from me.

the amp uses a 5pin din connection to go from the stock hu to the factory amp (about 35w) i dont know the exact pinout for this, but what i do know is that it will be available on google somewhere as i have seen it before. i think i downloaded it, so i will search my files for you ...

you say new stereo ... usually on these it has a DIN connector (here in uk at least) its about 1inch square with 2 sets of wires usually like red blue yellow orange and black, then another with green purple grey and white. The first is the power and the second is the speaker connectors.

Also you might have a set of phono outputs either labelled front/rear or sub, you might have all like me :) these are what you would have to connect to that blighty little din plug. you can buy adapters to convert the din into phono, but with this you got to be careful and know the exact pinout.

personally, i found it easier to remove the amp and run new wires to the speakers, i wouldnt really recommend this unless you were familiar with wiring otherwise it can take a while and prone to getting it wrong and screwing yourself over heh heh

i am sure there is also someone out there on here that will know the pinouts and could possibly help you more than what the info i have provided you with here.

Matt

I found and posted the wiring for the 7series a little while ago; will try to dig it up again when I have time.

What you want to do can be done, although I personally prefer replacing all items when I can. Important note though...how many speakers does your vehicle have now and how many are you planning on using after the replacement? A few other details are important before you go all out, but will have to get to them later (i;m late at the moment)

My apologies, my mentioned post on the 740 series wiring was actually for the 9series. However, the following link might be of use to you. If you click the DOWNLOAD NOW, blue button on the bottom of the page linked, it will pull up a very nicely done instruction sheet (with wiring colors I believe) on how to do a complete head unit replacement in the 740.

Volvo 740 Head Unit Replacement

Hope this helps.
