I just purchased a 2000 S70 SE in the last few days, so I apologize if this is a dumb question. I searched but did not find anything.

The car has no fog lights. I see in the front bumper where I can remove the panel (acces to the tow hooks) where a bracket exists...I am guessing that this is where fogs could be mounted.

My question is whether I can add stock fogs easily, by purchasing new or used, and simply plug into an existing harness? Or would I have to wire them up?

If I add aftermarket fogs, what is recommened?

Thanks.

best way is to check to see if the wiring is there already. if not, then you would have to wire them. if the wiring is there, get the stock ones with upgraded bulbs. if you have to wire yourself because there is no wiring, bet any brand that catches your fancy. the real question is do you want fogs or driving lights? i am guessing that you know the difference, obviously. then it is just a matter of aesthetics on your car. stock location or cut the bumper. good luck and keep us posted. if possible, show some before and after pics.

A set of stock fogs are over $300...since I am cheap that rules out this option.

I'll have to look into aftermarket to see what fits. I don't think the opening is going to look very good without the stock plastic covers in place.

try vandsautodismantlers.com if you want used stock pieces. that way you get the housings cheap and then upgrade the bulbs. heicos and hellas will run you that much for quality pieces.

Per vandsautodismantlers:

"We do have these for 65.00 each for the fog lamps and 15.00 each for the
covers."

I haven't yet checked to see if the harness is there...just lazy the last few days.

OK - looks like the wiring is there! On both sides there is similar wiring, and it terminates in an adapter (or whatever it's called). The adapter has a metal plug in it (I assume to keep crud out), and the plug has a clip on it so that the wiring can be clipped up and out of the way.

So if I get the lights and new covers for the opening, then all I would need is the dash switch? Does anyone know which switchplate I need to install the switch to? How do I get the switchplate off in order to install?

Am I correct in assuming that the switch simply slides into the dash in the appropriate spot?

Thanks,
Coldax

I am in the proces of assembling the various parts. Should be ready to install in a week or so. I will try to post up pics and a detailed description at that time.

Sorry for the long delay...I have actually installed the lights, but I bought the wrong dash switch off eBay. So I went to the dealer but the delivery has been delayed. In hindsight, I should have bought used from one of the numerous dealers, but I mistakenly thought I could get it from the delear in just a few days.

However, I have taken pictures and almost finished the writeup, and if the dealer is right about delivery date, I should have all the information posted here about 1 week to 10 days.

Did you get a new switch for the fog lights or was the switch already there?

The switch is not in the car - I ordered a new one from a dealer. That is the final piece to this install, and it has been delayed. Coming to NJ on a slow boat from somewhere in Europe.

As stated above, I would have been better off ordering a used one from Erie Volvo or other used parts dealer. Cheaper and faster. Part should be here this week; look for my complete write up with pictures soon.

So I picked up the switch this morning, installed it, and....

switchee no workee! :(

It seems I have to take it to the dealer to have the software 'activated'.

More to follow as this 'little project' unfolds....

Coldax.

I have an appointment with the local dealer this Friday (6/6). They say it will cost about $100. If I had known this at the beginning I never would have embarked on the project, but I am too far in to stop now. (IMG:http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/mad/mad0229.gif)

I just came back from the dealer, Bridgewater Volvo in Bridgewater, NJ, and the lights work! Hurrah!

But...

It cost me $172.00!!!! At first they said the software activation would cost 1/2 hour of labor, which sounded fine with me.

But I needed a relay, which I sadly overlooked when installing the other parts. So I agreed to have them install it. The relay was $35 and the labor $125, plus tax. And they washed the car. Meh.

I'll still post the writeup, but this ended up costing way more than I planned so I am a bit sore and not ready do the last final edits to the how-to just yet.

$125 for labot on a $35 part. holy effin shhhhhhaving cream  as we say in brooklyn. at this rate, those fog lights better be able to land jets at newark. well, at least you got fogs. and a great story which will be humorous 80 years from now. your great grandkids will crowd around you begging you to tell them the fog-light story.

My V70 came without driving lights and I wanted some. My dealer had a pair in
another V70 in his spare parts lot and I asked him to put them in for me. Good thing too! It turned out that even though the wire harness was already in the car, TWO relays were needed in the fuse box as well as a new dash switch. The whole setup cost me ~ $130 and was well worth it.

Sounds like they really ripped you off, however dealer pricing and labor rate are always high (be glad they dont do the common thing of charging a 3 hour minimum).

Dealers are like emergency rooms, they will be in your wallet as soon as you walk in the door before anything even happens.

If it were me, I would have simply ran new wires to the Volvo switch (so it looked proper) and bypassed any need for software activation.

Have you checked all the light posibilities to make sure your new lights work correctly? In some cases fog lights are set to turn off when high beams are on, which might be part of what was required in the programming. If they are just driving lights, they may have programmed it so that they come on with running lights and not just with the headlights, etc. Several possibilities exist. As for me, I prefer beign able to turn on those lights when I want, so I tend to wire them in myself to bypass any such annoying programming that some cars can have.

Coldax,

I hope the lights are still well in service, lighting up the landing strips in Newark.
