just bought a second hand volvo. just want to know the causes of boil overs and how to prevent it. i noticed that whenever i floor the gas pedal the water over flows form the water reserve tank. im using a prestone coolant btw. . . . im not sure if there's any tiny leaks from the hoses or radiator. . . fan seems working. Hope this would be an easy cheap repair. thanks in advance! :)

additional problems. .

BTW another QUESTION

re fault in the engine electronic system? the manual says that if the light stays on (yes mine is on) after the engine has started, a fault has been detected in the engine's fuel or ignition system. (ignition works fine. not hard starting). Fuel? im using unleaded only. This mean that the engine does not meet exhaust regulations.

Do i need a tune up???

Last Q. . . My speedometer is working but intermitently. broken speed sensor or cable? how to fix. . .

now i have 3 problems with it Boil over, EES light is on, and speedometer. i really love the car and it runs very very well. i love the handling too. hope you guys can help me figure out how to fix this stuff cheaply. Thanks in advance!

Take it to a reputable cooling place and have the system pressure tested. If there is a leak in your cooling system this should identify where the leak in your cooling system is.

Otherwise you might have head gasket problems - e.g. does the vehicle emit much water out of the exhaust pipe when it is running?

Good luck!

nope it does not emit any smoke.

does the water reserve cap cause boil overs too? will have its pressure checked asap. im not really sure with the fan. does it work always or it runs automatically when its hot? for like how many seconds?

It is a bit risky and can be very expensive buying one of these vehicles if you haven't had it checked over before purchasing it.

Could be a number of things

QUOTE
EES light is on,

If your vehicle is 1995 or previous it should be fitted with two DTC boxes under the bonnet near the front of the engine, follow the manual and using the procedures listed in the manual, see if you can cancel the codes.

Fixing cheaply and Volvo are two things that aren't normally associated with each other.

thanks for your reply. bought the car 3 months ago.

a volvo mechanic told me that the speedometer might be loose, fan is not running properly. had it checked with OBDII no error detected.

will have it repaired tomorrow.

mmmm

intermittent speedo.... do you have abs and tracs working...

note that just cos dash lights arnt on doesnt mean its working beacuse some nasty ppl are known to remove these bulbs (like my car!!!) can u turn tracs on and off and see the dash light work? if not your speedo may be linked to a faulty abs module (use search for further details)

quick fix (temp) for speedo which i had to do (whilst rolling) on the motorway a few weeks back to make sure i diddnt hit any speed cameras!!!

shift to neutral
restart engine...
speedo will start back up
continue as per normal

RE quik fix. let the car roll while in neutral then start the engine?

Over Boil Solved!!! no leaks found. Mechanic added an O ring under the water reserve cap. usually after i floor the car and the engine heats up the water over flows from the reserve now it does not boil over anymore after flooring it. will observe it for a week just to make sure. Fan is working fine. mechanic cleaned the sockets of the relay for better contact.

speedometer running too.

will try ur quick fix seanmc87 if the speedometer does not work again.

you dont have to let it roll in neutral, i only say that if you are say on a no-stop zone and it dies and you need it for speed cameras etc....

just turning the engine on and off agai should fix it

but if you are in a no stop zone you can just shift to neutral and do a rolling restart...get me?

ABS module will need replacing..this means ur tracs is not workin either as tracs works thru the abs

not really a huge problem but if it bothers you....
look for "abs module" and you will find plenty of people with same problem its quite an easy fix (with abit of soildering) and you are still able to run your car with the abs module removed.

after thought...

is it engine check light on or serivce light?

engine check light can be set off by a load of things

check the self diagnostic unit under the hood and see what codes its brings back and it will be easier to narrow things down.

The ABS module is in the engine-bay. I think in the Philippines, you guys are right-hand drives, right? That means, if you are FACING the engine bay, your ABS module + hydraulic pump assembly would be on the right side, far up near the engine firewall, just behind your air filter box.

You'll need a torx socket E5 to remove the ABS module to send it for a rebuild.

As for your lights, have the error codes read using a code-reader and go from there (if you have an OBD2 system). If you have an OBD1 system, then go to the General Volvo Non-Model Specific section, and i the Links to Sites thread, find the link for reading codes for an OBD1 system. I hope you know how to distinguish what you have. If you dont, then look at your dash-ashtray, to the coin-holder. Are the letters "OBD-II" engraved on the coin-holder? If not, then you have an obd1 system.

should solve the speedo problem.... there are instructions somewhere for a self fix and show you how to soilder the abs unit not sure if its this site or not. but you can send it out for a fix.

it will make your speedo work again and abs and tracs.

http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/Volvo_...lvo_V70_ABS.htm

look there for instructions on removal and that guy will also repair for you if you want.

self diaog unit is under the hood behind driver side headlamp its a box you need to remove the cover and pull jumper wire out of the holder...inserting it in different positions and pressing the button will read for different parts of car ... transmission/engine/ignition etc (light flashes) im sure some one has written up about the codes etc so search for "diagnostic"

your speedo gear might be going. there is a kit from fcpgorton.com that will fix your speedo. now if your abs/trac is going, that will also cause the speedo to act all wonky. in the abs/trac light on? i can't seem to get a grasp on any of your replies, except for the bear. the o ring that the mechanic installed, did he replace the thermostat also? so you have the socket under the coin slot in front of your shifter? if not, then you will have to read the codes from the black boxes under the hood. do any codes come up when you read from the obdII socket? there should be a basic no fault code. if nothing comes up on the reader, then youmust have them read from the box.
