The CD cartridge is stuck in the head unit and cannot be extracted. Also, we have had major problems with the cd unit not wanting to play certain cds and skipping or stopping completely with other cds. any suggestions what to do?

It's not good. I had the same problem and the dealer service people extracted the cartridge/magazine this morning. They say the unit is made by Alpine, and the CD Cartridge mechanism is not very reliable.
A Warrantied replacement from Volvo was quoted to me at $572, PLUS installation.

The dealer suggested installing a single CD/Cassette model, but it is also nearly as expensive.

Anyone have suggestions?

I haven't had a chance to look at aftermarket items yet.

if you are going to change your stereo, try crutchfield.com on the stuck cd, is it in the head unit or the changer? if the head unit, i think there was a thread about how to take apart the housing to extract a cd. and one for the changer as well. just poke around and you'll find the thread.
