Hi i own a 95 volvo 940 turbo. She runs great and hasn't really ever given me any problems but lately i've been wondering if i can get more out of my turbo without dropping a good number on a new or even used one, i just wanna know if theres anyway i can get more psi out of it or more boost at certain times. please get back to me i'd rather save some money that waste it.

There's too many way but it's difficult to tell which one can save most money... I am not a mechanic.
Here's some stupid opinions of mine:
Without touching the turbine, I think a computer program upgrade can jack up the boost or install a intercooler would helps the output.
however, upgrade the computer sometime can dear than change a turbo :( I don't know if you can find some upgrade for 940...

try an exhaust uprgrade, filter, plugs, etc. it's a stock turbo, stock meaning that it doesn't change. any website that lists mods for the cars always list turbos being uprgraded. any quick fix is just that a quick fix. save up and do it right the first time, instead of doing a crappy job and paying double to repair everything again.good luck

havent i already added a post to this or was it a similar thread, cos i have lost myself. was going to link you to it.

M

edit: just realised anyway

what you CAN do is indeed change the intercooler, but thats expensive if you want a good one, the original is fine, just make sure the ends of it are secured :P

what i have done is bought a cbv block off plate, which basically sits in place of the cbv on the stock turbo and then you have to buy a dump valve (same thing) and manually install that somewhere after the turbo and before/after the intercooler, nearer the throttle body the better. it basically stops the pressure made from the turbo forcing your throttle body into your pistons hence the big woosh noise.

you can then also buy a manual boost controller valve, which for like £15 arent that bad, but they are really shocking, especially if you dont have a pressure guage, as then you can take it too high and screw up your engine. anything over 14psi on a stock motor. personally, if you want a boost controller, dont fart around with the manual ones get a proper electric one. around £150 new from ebay for the cheaper ones which are better than the manuals at any length i would say (citation needed somewhere here).

a boost guage is also a must if you have one of these. but £30-50 for a boost gauge, £20 for the blank off plate, £20 for a dump valve off flebay, £15 for the mbc . for around £100 you could prob take yours from say 6psi standard to about 9 or 10 safely. and you will notice the boost and the turbo kick is more prominent, also keep an eye on your fuel guage as you will be saying goodbye to that lovvely high explosive liquid on a more often basis

edit: found the page. This Thread might be helpful too

i agree with the blow by valve, but if he doesn't do any work it is really not worth it. i know that the stock valve is usally just a rubber diaphragm, but to spend money on a blow-by valve and keep it stock is not a smart thing. try an exhaust upgrade with down pipe to let the engine exhale and a k & n filter to breather better. new plugs and wires. then go from there. then you can work by stages. stage1- 2- 3- etc. each stage would complete a specified function. why go stage 4 when everything else is stage 0. good luck, you'll get nine million different opinions on this. it all depends on you. keep us posted.

he can always find an intercooler from a canadian or european volvo, their intercoolers are larger than ours in the US, or get one from a larger turbo vehicle. once that is taken care of, then you can also get the larger turbo from that model, including the injectors, pipes, blow by valve, etc. then the chip. but when you do that, the can of worms is open, brakes, suspension, tranny, etc. just changing one thing isn't going to do it, you need the whole thing done. best in stages and in order.

Personally, as soon as i raise the performance (engine wise) of the car, the next thing i usually say do is the brakes, you got to stop some how, plus the existing braking system wont cope with huge amounts of power.

Indeed a bigger more free-flowing intercooler will help. I have read somewhere that this particular person had got an intercooler from a big truck or somethign and it was the same dimensions except for the depth. was more free flowing and he was running silly boost with it in his volvo... might be worth taking a tape measure to a few scrappies.

my intercooler came off of a canadian R. it is bigger and it fits in the stock location. along with the tranny cooler. big difference. 'bear has one from a saab, i think, and it fit just fine. and i know all about the brakes after the performance mods from experience, since i didn't do it. just the mods. was real impressive until i tried to stop. key word, tried. at least the lamp-post was soft, and it did get me to stop. real fast. oh well, a little bit older, and still STUPID
