Looking for insight.

I recently purchased a 1998 Volvo S70 (real beauty...only 83k miles and flawless inside and out). After a few weeks I notice a slight sputtering while driving and it stalled on me a couple times. I ran a bottle of Lucas through the fuel system and that seems to have taken care of the sputtering for the most part...but a few days later the "Check Engine" light came on. It has alternated on and off over the last couple days and I have a bit of a rough idle. Someone suggested cleaning or replacing the Mass Airflow Sensor.

Thoughts? I plan on keeping and pampering this one...I even think the wife is getting jealous. Photos coming soon.

I am having the same problem, had it plugged into a code reader and it showed a MAF fault, so I am about to remove and clean it.
However I have been told that the real fault could still be the ETM - even though there is no fault code or ETM light on the dash.
If cleaning the MAF doesn't work I will buy a new one (approx $250). If its the ETM then I've got a problem - while Volvo USA cover the ETM under warranty, Volvo UK don't....... they will want the equivalent of around $600 -maybe more!

I put a meter on the MAS and it was out of whack. Purchased the new part at teh dealer for $245.00. Only took about fifteen minutes to replace. She purrs like a kitten now. Now I have to take her to the body shop.

I took her out for a test drive after replacing the part and a truck in front of me blew a tire and a chunk of it caught the front bumper and put a small scratch in it. Hopefully it wan't cost a small fortune.

Nevertheless, running great. My wife and I now carpool in it to the office because her vehicle (a full-size SUV) uses too much fuel. Getting about 32-35 miles per gallon on the highway (averaging 25 alltogether).

Thanks for the feedback. :liebe011:

Best to plug it in and read the fault code first. However, as other's have said, it may read as a MAF fault, but could still be the ETM (it was on my 1999 S70 - is there an ETM on 98 cars?). Either way you are in the right country to get it sorted, the MAF's are cheaper in the US than in the UK (takes 15 mins to fit with no great skill) and I hear your ETM's are covered by warranty.
