Please forgive me for I am car illiterate.

Could someone give me step by step instructions on how to get the console off so I can replace the bulb for the gear shifter letters.

Since this was posted several months ago, I assume you may have already replaced the bulb. You don't need to remove the entire console. Just remove the face place where the radio is located. There are two screws at the top behind the AC controls (that plate simply pops off) and there are two screws behind the ash tray. Now remove the cover below the parking brake (it justs pops out) and remove two screws from there. Gently remove the plastic center portion of the console being careful with the seat heater switches and bulb. You may be able to access the shifter bulb which is under the left (drivers) side of the shifter. If you can't get to it, there are two bolts that hold the shifter face plate in place, remove those and you can definitely get to the bulb.
