Hi all

I need to remove the piece of trim in the passenger footwell that surrounds the bonnet release lever on my '95 440.
My intention was to replace a faulty central door locking control unit.
I cannot see how it is held in place?

However threads on other sites are leading me to beleive that the unit isnt located behind here anyway?

Am I wasting my time looking here as i've already had the glovebox out and it wasnt behind there.

So actually two problems for the price of one - sorry

any help greatly appreciated

in my experience the trim is just a push fit around the sides (they are all just tucked into the surrounding trims, and one big screw in the middla (maybe under a cover?) but none of my cars have central locking (well only electric locking linked to the drivers door - and the control unit for that is in the door) and my newest is a 92 so I cant speak for the newer models.

to remove the trim you need to pull of the piece of plastic that you pull to open the bonnet and then undo the one screw that holds it in place.you then need to lift in an upwards direction as at the bottom of the trim is two locating cups that fit over two clips in the bodywork (a real pain but it is dooable).
it is then just a matter of jugling it out gently as not to break it.
as for the locking unit most people say that it is up behind the steering column wich is an easier piece of trim to get out.
hope this helps

hey guys

big thanks to you both for the info.

Stupidly I thought i'd tackle this in the dark with only a torch and didnt even see that screw til this morning!
My trouble is at moment i'm full time dad to toddlers and dont have any daytime to do these things and my free time is at a bit of a premium.

Anyways i should be able get it off but obviously now I wont find what i'm looking for?

I was sent this link on a non volvo related forum by another helpful chap a while back who'd seen similiar problems to what i'm having
it makes good reading anyway...

Common Volvo probs

So i need to look behind the steering column right.....

thanks again
(Grendel1960 you are a veritable fountain of knowledge i've sorted loads of probs from your input to this forum )

if you look on the other 440 forum you will find a post there saying that if you take the trim of under the steering wheel and stand on you head you should be able to see the unit up there somewhere.
it will be marked keyless entry unit and a big long number.
are you sure it needs replacing??.there are many other ways you can get your remote to work again or are you looking to fit one ?

A mirror on a stick and a torch work for me to see up there.

thats great stuff Towerclocks,

Well the guy who sent me that link said it would be easier to replace the control unit than faff about with the door mech.
I'm guessing maybe its just the 480's that have the unit in the footwell?

Basically my problem is that the central locking works on the key fine but from the fob it doesnt operate the drivers door just the other doors and the hatch...

Any ideas? Also dont know if its relevant but the immobiliser needs resetting as the battery was flat when I got the car
The dash light flashes when engine is running and is solid with just the ignition on and extinguished when car locked and immobiliser activated!

pulled the code - 2-2-1 Fuse or ground terminal (locking)

or am i getting off the beaten track here?

Well i would say that as the rest of the doors are opening on the fob that the keyless entry module is working and that changing it may not do anything for you.
Im afraid it sounds like you have a problem inside the door with the motor that operates the lock on the drivers door. it may just bo a dodgy connction in there as you say it works fine on the key?.
this suggests that the motor is fine and is an electrical problem.
investigation is the way to go and use your haynes to guide you if you have one.if not get one they are chrap enough

yeah good logic :) I do have a haynes book but it didnt cover this problem unfortuneately. I only try and post when i have exhausted every other possible solution.

Will get the door off and have a poke about and try and despatch the kids off somewhere :)

thanks again will let you know how i get on

It certainly sounds as if it is just the drivers door solenoid that has a problem.

Could be but then it works on the key or do you think thats because its a mechanical/physical action involved?

I know there is a microswitch in the drivers door only, according to Haynes, but it doesnt state its function. Tho elsewhere these seem to be utilized for courtesy light functions?

I will just have to strip doors down and perhaps swap over components with passenger door process of elimination and all that my dear Watson!

cheers
