My 1994 940 (non-turbo, w/ ABS) has had it's ABS light on for about 2-3 months. The car was braking fine until I felt the right front strut start to go out. Still the car braked and steered properly. The last time I drove the car, every time I would lift up on the gas to press the brakes, I immediately heard and felt loud clunks (from the right front end), and the brakes on that wheel would actually lock up; at which point I could hear loud grinding noises along with the clunks, until the car finally skids to stop. Fortunately I was able to turn around and drive the car back home, but with the same problem. The only way to unlock that wheel was to shift the car into park again, and then drive off. The car does has over 200K miles on it, but I just replaced all four rotors and pads less than 5 months ago. Is this both a strut and ABS issue, or just one of the two? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

First, are you doing the work?
If you are.
Jack up the car and remove both front wheels.
Look carefully at the left and right sides.
Do they look the same?
Get back to me.

If your clunking sound also occurs during acceleration and when you start from a stop, that would be a clear indication you need to check/have checked your plunge joint. Have you been under the car and inspected the boots and other components?

Thanks for getting back to me. I actually had a friend take care of it. Apparently the guy who changed my brakes (pads and rotors) didn't tighten something on the caliper so the entire brake assembly was essentially loose and causing all the problems...at least that's jist of what he told me. Again, thanks to all for responding.
