I have a 1990 740 turbo that runs great but today the climate control switch got stuck on defrost. It will not budge out of defrost to any other positions. I pulled off the cover and tried examining it and found this small metal spoke looking piece that was loose inside the climate control unit. I held that piece down and was able to move it to the A/C and other positions just fine BUT no matter what position it is in now the air only blows out of the defroster. Any ideas on how to fix this? Need a new climate control unit? ECC? Thanks!

I have the same problem. Did you get any solutions to this? How did you get the slider assembly out?

This is what worked for me on my 1990 740 turbo... I carefully unsnapped the cover which goes all the way to the ignition slot. There are 4 philips screws to remove. Once open I was able to see where it was hanging up. The some fiddling, trying different positions I was able to slide the lever passed the obstruction which is a worn out/ broken plastic piece (half circle located to the right of the yellow piece in picture1 and close up in pic2). Since mine was stuck all of the way to the left (max ac) as long as it did not move to that position it would slide to all of the others. I was able to find a "L" shape piece of metal with a hole a one end that fit into the spot. I used a zip tie to hold it in place. It may not be the prettiest fix but at least we can use the defroster and heater now. I have been told by a 30+ year Volvo mechanic to start searching junk yards if I want it fixed properly.
