Hi

My 850 TDI seems to produce the infamous diesel black smoke. It is not really noticeable on normal cruising but under acceleration it is at its worst.

Any ideas of how I can reduce this. Is there anything specific for this engine that would be worth checking?

Thanks

Stu

Hi sk799, I would advise you to find a Bosh-Diesel garage near you and send the car over for a quick check, might be just a small regulation.

A noticeable white smoke suddenly appeared on my exhaust one day, and set the Lambda light on. Refer to post on 'Lambda Light'. I sent it back to the dealer right away.

is it a turbo ?
if so you need to get it replaced.

if not it could be a fuel problem

I had the white smoke once when I left the car idling while parked for about a half hour.

I asked about it and it was nothing to be concerened about; it cleared up after driving.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought:

White smoke= water in fuel mix
Blue smoke = oil in fuel mix
black smoke= insufficient air in fuel air mix ie. incomplete combustion.

WATER (?) in fuel mix...?

Diesel & white smoke = unburnt diesel in exhaust system.

Means badly gone head gasket, ie. you're leaking coolant into engine.
ie. its not smoke its steam!

...its not good.

Correct.

But the Volvo 850 TDI does produce a nice black cloud as well when stepping on the gaspedal... nothing to really worry about! When disconnecting the EGR-valve, it slightly reduces, but don't expect miracles then!
