Hello All,

I also have a check engine light on. I took it to a mechanic near me and he used a diagnostic tool that gave P0128 (coolant temp too low) error code. I called the nearest volvo dealer and told him this and he said the code means nothing since certified volvo mechanics have a specialized tool and the code I gave him was irrelevant. Is this really the case? I read the thread about the same error code and was ready to flush the coolant, replace sensor and replace the thermostat. Should I proceed with what the local mechanic diagnosed or should I take it to the dealer for a $100 check engine diagnostic and deal with whatever results that gives?

Thanks

Think I'd go with your local mechanic....Have him flush the old coolant out and put in fresh...It may be time to do it anyway....Possible the code means low coolant..

Something real major, then the dealer may be the first choice, although like you said, costs at least $100 dollars just to drive...good luck

If it was the sensor not working right it would have a code saying the sensor is not working right. If is telling you exactly what the problem is the coolant temp is too low, in other words the thermostat is opening too soon and the engine is not warming up properly. It seems to be a common problem this time of year. Mine did it once it got cold out here in Pennsylvania. I changed the thermostat with a real volvo replacement and have never had a problem with that code since. The dealers are going to give you a line of nonsense because they want to charge you $90+ an hour to fix something you can do yourself for $30. Living in Northeast PA where is gets bitter cold all winter you will find that any thermostat has about a 2 year life before the spring gets weak and starts to open too soon. You can get an OEM thermostat from www.alloemvolvoparts.com its under the cooling system category as thermostat kit. The one made by Wahler for $23.95 is the same as the Volvo one without the Volvo box and more expensive price tag. Wahler makes the part for Volvo. Hope this helps you out.

Thank you both,

Well - at my wife's insistence - I took it to the volvo dealer and for $110 he told me basically what my local mechanic said with his non-volvo specific dignostic tool that it was an engine coolant issue. He then proceeded to give me the same advice that these boards have been giving to (1) flush and put in new coolant (2) replace thermostat (3) replace sensor. He said that he could do it for $350. I am guessing my local mechanic can replace the thermostat and flush the coolant for under $100 including parts. I guess my next question is: can a regular mechanic order and replace a sensor or will at least this need to be done at the dealer?

Thanks again

Anyone can do it, all the parts are easily available and to be honest is such an easy job you could do it yourself if you have the patience.

Thanks s40guy and mccoles,

I checked and toped off the coolant - that didnt seem to be the problem as the light is still on. I now plan on buying the $23 thermostat. Could you write some quick - but detailed instructions of how I can change it out myself? Thanks in advance.
