Hiya,
Seems my old 440 1.6 has finally bitten the dust. Just a query here.
It seems to have developed a bad coolant leak through what i thought was the oil sump on the belt side of the engine. It's only got 80 000 on the clock, was wondering what it would cost to fix, and more importantly, is it worth it, and how much will it cost? (bearing in mind i only payed £750 for it 2 years ago). Pity really, it's been a good old thing, never let me down, ever, well till now.

The coolant doesn't seem to be contaminated with oil, but it really is p***ing out when the engine is running. An thoughts!

:) It sounds like your water pump has gone wrong.
It is driven by the belt from the alternator and the crankshaft pulley and the power steering and the air-con.--these are dependant on weather you have aircon or not as you do not specify this in your question.
The water pump is the one that is driven by the back of the belt after the crankshaft pulley.
The job itself is easy but is a real pain due to the location of all the bolts-(very little room)
The pumps are £15 up depending on the quality of the unit and available from ebay and several volvo part companies on the internet as well.
good luck

I have documented replacing one of these pumps, somewhere down the forum, once done all my cooling problems were pretty much eliminated, you might want to check the condition of the hoses at the same time as if you are doingn the job, it may be worth doing the whole lot.
yes coolant out of that side is almost certainly the water pump leaking round the shaft, there is a side panel in the wheel arch, once that is removed you will see exactly where its coming from.
when I did mine I removed the alternator for better access, its a tight squeeze to get in there while the engines in the car, but its doable.

Thats right if you jack the car up on the drivers side and prop up on axle stand for safety you can then remove the front wheel.
Once you have done this you will see a plastic panel held on by two bolts,if you remove this you will be able to see the water pump.
For ease of access it is advisable to remove the alternator as this allows you a little more room for manouver and after doing this you will have also removed the drive belt to the pump and should be able to see exactly what you are doing.
if you have the haynes manual this will guide you through it all.
took me about two hours start to finish to complete the job and did help the cooling system a lot.

Thanks all. Well your descriptions fit exactly what looks top be wrong. Gonna give it a go, hell £15 odd quid to get the old girl on the road seems fair enough. At that price thiers nothing to loose even if it isn't the water pump.
Cheers Gendel for the talk through and pics, this may be the biggest help.
