240GL 88 Estate, >250,000km: I find myself having to battle to close the doors against the springs too often. I often have my hands full, and as I'm getting older and my body is weak, it's increasingly difficult and frustrating to have to keep this up. They prob do want lubricating, but I find even that a difficult task sometimes. I also want to know if anyone can advise me on how to move the front seats rearwards 20mm more than std, as my knees don't bend much & I'm having much trouble getting in and out of the car. I have to lean the seat back too much just to stop damaging it when I brace myself against it to pull my leg into the car. With an ageing and thus stiffening western world population base, I think it abominable that these problems are still ignored by auto makers. Mod kits will become necessary for many of us, any takers?

Besides the normal horizontal and vertical angle seat adjustments, you can also change the bottom seat position with lever - its hard to describe. Its talked about in the owner's manual.

I have the seat fully back, but it's not enough with my dicky knees, they won't pull in enough to easily slip into the car. I've adjusted the seat back and the seat base angles, but still It's not enough room. I need to move the seats back at least another 20mm. I know it doesn't sound much, but it would make life easier. I can't easily afford to change cars again, as not much else in my price/functions range can do what's needed any better.

This post may give you some ideas:
http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.p...t=850+seats+240
This shows how to fit Volvo 850 seats into a 240. Essentially for your conversion, you'd have to take out the drivers seat, remove the assembly holding the rails (see the second picture) and drill new holes 20 mm further back to put the seat in the position you want. A word of warning, you should ensure there is enough metal at the new position to securely hold the seat - if there isn't the seat could snap off the rails in an accident -especially if you're rear-ended. I experienced this breakage in an unmodified Nissan 200SX a long time ago -not an experience I'd recommend.
Robert240 is right about the driver's side seat cushion -There are levers under the seat at the front and the back that allow you to raise or lower the whole seat. If it's in the "up" position, you will have less room to get in - worth a look.

Re Robert240: I am confused, my seats havre a knob on the outside to tilt the seat base fore/aft. there's a bar across the front to control the for/aft sliding on the rails. your suggesting there's even more controls?

Yes - The manual refers to it being the "seat height adjustment" - I think there are 3 selections in front and back ...

FYI. You can't (well at least I can't) make this adjustment while sitting in the seat. You have to reach underneath to get to these controls with one hand and physically lift or lower the seat with your other hand. It's not spring-loaded.

Thank you folks! I found the height controls and raised the seat to max, and I can get in and out much easier. Sad that the passenger seat doesn't have the same, though I could prob adapt one. I am very grateful for the help. The controls were easy to find. Again, thanks! The Lord bless you all.

...you need a Needle Nose Grease Gun adapter to inject grease into the hinges through the small hole in the hinge body...and the points in the photo below
