I just shipped my car across country, and heard weird noises from the engine when he pulled it off the truck. Turns out there is a huge hole in the Oil Pan. My question is, should I buy one used? ($125.00) or new ($400.00), and what is the price of the Gasket too? Any help would be appreciated in this process.

If for some strange reason that you have to pay for it yourself get the used one and the gasket is a liquid material that you can buy from a Volvo parts supplier.

I think the bigger issue is when did the oil pan get punctured, and how many times was the engine started and run without oil in the pan?

It is not unusual for car transporters to have to move cars off and on the truck multiple times, if they are picking up and dropping off cars at multiple locations. So when did the damage to the pan occur? And after that, how many times has the engine been run? It would be difficult if not impossible to not notice the event that caused the pan damage, since there would be several quarts of oil dumped!

The fact that the engine sounded funny is also cause to believe that it had been run for more than a few seconds without oil. This could be cause for a thorough engine rebuild.

Good luck!
