I purchased a base S40 2.4i (2007 Model) that was upgraded with everything (Power seats, moon roof, aluminium inlays) except the stupid trip calculator. Why isn't that a standard option!? I don't have the Environment Upgrade either.

Anyway, I found this
http://volvopartspeople.com/SearchProduct....c=Trip+Computer

So the parts cost ~125, I am not understanding why I need a new Indicator Stalk. My indicator stalk has Info Button, and Read Button, and Scroll wheel.

If I do have to buy the stalk and kit, it seems I still need software from VIDA.

I asked at my dealer and he said the download takes 2 hours (WTF is it a DVD?) and the install would take 1 hour. 3 hrs @100 an hour + 180 in parts that I can get for 125 = SCAM!

So they want 500, I want to do it for under 200.

Can't I do the physical install, then drive over and ask them to upgrade / flash me the software (shouldnt take more than 15 minutes)

Yea it's pretty nuts. Like how the software update is available for the 2005 S40 to drop the windows with the key fob, by holding the unlock key. I asked if they could do it, and one dealership said it was impossible, but the other admitted that it was possible, but they wanted $130 for an hour of service work, though it's hooking up a computer, checking/unchecking/drop-down-menuing a box, clicking "GO" and boom, $130 in your pocket.

Now I know the reason people only go to the dealership for warranty work....

That's also the reason that I hate having a computer based car, is that everything is a freakin software song and dance to add anything to the car, which they rape you on labor charges for. I now wonder what I'll do when my car breaks and it's out of warranty... Cause I'm sure not taking it to a dealership unless I've absolutly got to. And if that's my only choice, I'm going to speak with my wallet, and try to just substitute for another car, though I really looked forward to driving this car until it fell apart. I guess that's part of the price you pay in the modern euro-luxury car market.

Why can't this be like an iPod, plug in to usb, and if you "pay" for an option you can enable it.

For more complex things you would be required to do it at a Volvo Dealer.

Do non dealers have a VIDA system?

Hi 1st post on the forum

Did anyone get to the bottom of this ?

I have just taken delivery of a R-Design S40 without the OBC, I have the stalk with the READ button and the thumb scroll so can I just visit the dealer and have the software installed on the car ?

Thanks Poodle.

Spoke to my dealer this morning, it can be done if you have the stalk in place already.
They quoted me £250 for doing the software flash onto the car.
They said they would only need the car for an hour.
But seems a rip off for £250 for an hours work.

I don't mind them buying software, but there is NO WAY, it costs 500 for the software, maybe 50 pounds MAX. And this "labour" is not labour intensive.

Yea my local dealer wants to charge me $130 USD to get the software update to lower my windows using the key fob. $100 for an hour of "labor" and $30 for the software update itself. That's some bs right there.

If they said $500usd for a software install, I would laugh in their face. I started chuckling when they guy told me $130 for the window update... :/

what is the window update? How can I get it for a 2007?

I don't have autostart, the windows wont work when the key isnt in the ignition.

What are the alternatives? Are there guys on the street who have a Vida computer?

I don't mind paying for Volvo Price Controlled software, but 100 in labor for some jackass to click a few boxes in a computer.

The window update would just allow me to remotely lower the windows of the car by holding the unlock button, and raise them remotely with the lock button. It doesn't auto-start, and I imagine that unless volvo releases a way to do it (they won't) then there won't be a way to do it ever, considering the complexity of the electronics system (I say that because you can do it, but there is no seamless way to do it in our cars, but where there is a will and a ton of $$$, there is a way).

So if I want this, I go in and tell them? What is the final cost? Can I do it at home?

My remote only works from 3 bays / 30 feet away, is this correct?

The dealership down in South FL said they could do it for the $130. The dealership in North FL where I'm at school said it's not possible, and the service guy said he's never heard of it and couldn't find mention of it anywhere.

Yes, the radio distance on this car is really truly pathetic to the nth degree. In wide open space, I can signal it from maybe 50ft or so, but if there is anything in the way, it can be 30-20ft when it finally picks up the receiver. And it's not a low battery, because I've already had to replace the battery once.

I just did this. I took mine (07 S40) to my local dealer and they uploaded the software to add the trip computer. It cost around $125 and only took them 1/2 hour or so. I think it was worth it. I have the fleet model of the S40 which means the leather and power seats, no moon roof, and the correct turn signal stalk and computer but with no trip data. It was an easy upgrade for the dealer to do.

Edit: Cost was $104.95 for Labor, $25.00 for parts, $10.50 for shop supplies (scam), and $10.88 for sales tax (vary by state...i am in Ohio) for a total of $151.33
