I'm a first-time poster, so if I'm not doing something that I should be doing at this site be patient with me...

I have an 1989 Volvo 240 DL wagon that's still kicking out heat but is also producing that telltale sweet antifreeze smell through the vents that points to heater core trouble. Temp gauge is (for now) still reading normal, and I don't *think* anything's leaking into the passenger compartment. If I don't turn the heater on, the smell is diminished but still noticeable; however, where I live makes it tough to drive without heat at this time of year.

Assuming that I need to replace the core, any tips on how to get to it? And is there anything else that could be causing the smell (such as a split heater hose)?

Any advice would be appreciated...

Howdy. tenplus4 here , must have joined shortly after you. This is my first message. Ref. your heater core, I can tell you book time is over 4hrs to replace with new one. If youv'e never done one before then allow yourself all day. To do the job all the front switch/control panel has to come out plus heater ducts and wiring has to be manoevered to free heater assy. You will need a good light and being a contourtionist(not sure of the spelling) helps immensely. There are several brackets that have to be removed otherwise it will be to tight a fit to remove. If you want any more info just ask.
