Hello all - I recently bought an 89 240 4door dl with approx. 200,000 miles. My mech looked at it and said it should run great for another 100,000 with oil changes. He has not been in his shop this week and i am experiencing a rather annoying noise. A loud clunking combined with lurching of the vehicle in reverse,and then loud clunking in take off, fine when accelerating but a whining and grinding with occasional thumping upon taking foot off gas. Had it looked at at another shop, they said ball joints were bad. The noise varies with engine speed, does not change while braking. The ball joints may be bad, but i can't see this noise being that problem. I'm thinking drive support bearing or ujoint?

Is this an auto or manual? Sounds like a driveline related problem, most likely it will need to go on a rack to find ... unless its something like a stuck brake piston.
