Hello All,
It's fortunate that I love my '98 C70 coupe, or I may have pushed it off a cliff by now. The engine was just replaced a couple of weeks ago due to a timing belt break. The timing belt was replaced about two years ago, but the tensioner broke and disaster ensued to the tune of $4000.

Two days after getting it back from the mechanic, the car was leaking oil and it was raining from the ceiling of my car. The sunroof had never given me any issue before, but after a wash, water started dripping steadily from three different points around the perimeter of the sunroof. I took it back to the mechanic and he fixed the oil leak with no problem. He said the black, rubbery material around the sunroof had dried and cracked, resulting in a leak. Since a replacement of this material can be very expensive, he suggested soaking the material in baby oil for a couple of days to soften it up. He said this had worked with other cars he'd worked on. I'm willing to give it a shot if it will save me from dropping a few hundred more dollars into the car right now.

My question is if anyone else has had this issue with the sunroof and what the solution was. I'm hoping to get the new engine paid off before spending more money on repairs!

Thanks!

I noted the same problem after a high pressure car wash and a little water after driving through a torrential rain storm for 3 hours at 75. In general, around town I don't get much water.
To get rid of all the water, I rolled some newspaper up and tucked it into the sill under the sunroof. If you leave it there for a while it really grabs water well.

I am curious as to what you find with the baby oil and the seal.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

it might also be the drain tubes. they might have blocked up with the crud that accumulates around the seals. just another point to muddle your choices here. if you search fcpgroton.com, i think they offer a kit for the seals on your sunroof. it's not that expensive, just a pain in the butt to replace.

Thanks very much for your responses. For the time being, the baby oil seems to have done the trick. We haven't had any heavy downpours and I haven't taken it through a car wash yet, but it's held up fine under moderate rain. I've been taking the car through the same high-pressure car wash for a year and a half now and never had any leakage at all until the last trip through. Hopefully it'll hold up next time!
