I have a problem with my V50 , 2.0 LTR Diesel, Fuel consumption has gone from 6.5ltr per 100km to 8.8 per 100km also the car is sometimes really hard to start., the car starts to run but wont idle lots of black smoke wnen it does start.
Any thoughts please

My dealer replaced it in August of 07 but it may have failed again.

EGR modified part, if yours done august 07 and the egr application software done at same time (which it would have, standard procedure) then egr no longer main culprit for fault as new egr valve not prone for failure.

Not sure about fuel consumption but maybe your poor start caused by throttle housing butterflys jamming, this is what I would check next. There is a butterfly valve that closes when the engine is switched off to stop the engine dead, this can stick in the shut position and cause long crank, non start, smoke and really rough low idle (if it starts at all). This is in the housing between the inlet manifold and the turbo pipe.
