Hi: Today on a trip from Calgary to Edmonton we were alone on the highway well all of a sudden it sounded like a gunshot went off and when I looked up I saw a football side hole in my sunroof. We had been traveling at about 110km and were alone on the road. At first I thought perhaps it was a stone from another car or something dropped from an overpass but both of those possibilities were quickly rulled out.

Needless to say it was quite upsetting so I thought I would join the forum to see if this has happened to other owners?

Tomorrow I am going to contact the dealer as my vehicle is still under warranty. I'm not confident that I will be sucessful as I read on the BMW forum that this has occured to many people and the dealers were never willing to admit a defect in the glass.

To follow up with to my original posting. I wanted everyone to know that Volvo came through with warranty. The dealer was great! They accepted my explanation and covered the replacement sunroof and labour.

Cool, I have heard of it happening in a Nissan before, there was a slight defect on the glass or something, causing it to shatter, but took some time for the dealer to accept it.

Exploding glass can occur when the steel reinforment frame is too close to the glass. The PU glue cannot absorb shockforces due to little distance glass - reinforcement.

Hi - on May 2nd, 208 I have had exactly the same: on the German Autobahn at approx. 160Km/Hr. a big bang and thousands of small pieces of Glass in the car. In the fond seating pieces of glass were found between the leather cushions at least 3 cm deep! I can't imagine what would have happened to someone sitting in the back!
I had no more warranty and the dealer said they found a tiny scratch which pointed to a small stone - although there was no traffic close in front of me... weird.
Though this made me thinking: if you look at the Glass-roof-window of the XC90 (we can tilt it and open it), it has a small angle exposure to the front (driving direction) of the car (even when the roof is closed) : approximately an angle of 5 - 10 degrees. A quick calculation shows that a small stone coming from the front, hit at 160 Km/hr. develops a force which is ~ 10-16x when that same small stone (1 Gram) falls from a bridge ( 5 meters) ... I just wonder whether this is a serious security exposure: the majority of the automobiles today have layered security glass in at least the windshield glass to prevent these thousands of small pieces injuring people when a (small) stone hits the windshield glass. Most other cars I observed, do not have this mall aperture/angle exposure to the front of their roof-windows, and have basically horizontal glass roofs (where the force when hit by a stone from the front is much, much smaller!).
Any thoughts from anyone ?

Needles to say that the approx. 3500 USD equivalent repair was covered by my insurance which covers glass breaking because of these small stones - luckily. But I am still concerned by what would happen to people sitting on the back seats.....
