I looked thru the site to find out who has had the problems with the blower fan on the 850. There are a few posts but I'm not sure what the actual fix is. Mine blows on the 4th setting only. If someone has had the same problem and fixed it, please let me know what parts I would require so I can order them up. I live in the country so running back and forth looking for parts is a pain in the a$$.

Thanks

dman230,

I have the exact same issue. Did anyone reply to your question?

I was thinking it might be the fan switch which cost $40.00 to replace or the Blower Motor Resistor.

Does you car have the Electric Climate Control or not?

Mine does not.

My car is from Canada, I am in Bremerton, WA

Lets talk soon,

Mike

Looks like that your blower motor is on it's last legs. I had a similar problem years ago on my 850GLT. The solution was a replacement blower motor.

It sounds like the blower resistor to me.

If the motor works on the 4th setting there is nothing wrong with it!

settings 1-2-3 are run through a resistor, which burns out over time. Replace the resistor - it is a $80-90 dealer part. Volvo calls it "series resistance", if you ask for the blower motor resistor they will know what you are talking about. There are a few different ones: auto climate control vs. manual.

The replacement is easy enough. The resistor is not attached to the motor, just remove the glove box liner, the plastic kick panel and knee guard, and you will see where it is attached to the duct work. unclip the wire connector, remove a screw, pull it out - install is the same - just reversed.
