Based on info that I have seen posted on the internet I purchased Volvo brand spark plugs for my recently acquired 850. I read that Volvo's are temperamental and seem to do best with either Volvo brand or NGK iridium plugs. Is there any truth to this? What spark plugs do you use?

NGK iridiums. they were actually cheaper than getting the volvo plugs from the dealer. try fcpgroton.com if you want to use the stock plugs. anybody else want to chime in with their two cents?

Yeah, old thread, but all those views and only one response?

I'm a fan of the Bosch platinums. I put them in everything. Reliable, cheap (sometimes $1.99 on sale at Autozone), and good for 20k miles.

On a side note though, there are some vehicles that simply will not run with Bosch plugs and I have no idea why. I heard about it, never believed it, but saw it for myself working at Autozone way back when. The vehicle in question was a 2.3 liter Mustang, for what it's worth.

I've used the stock Volvo platinum tips, and the Bosch equivalents. Now, am on DENSO iridiums, and they are also cool!

I am also on Denso Iridiums after Volvo and NGK. For the cost i can,t say they are better or worse than the others, but i do get about 1or 2 mpg extra with em in so they must be slightly more efficient

I was very interested to fit in BRISK plugs, which have a 360degree angled-fire. (THe design was in such a way that the node for the tip was not needed). But they stopped manufacturing it - not because the firing capability was not good, but because the plug dont last, they need to be changed every 30,000 kms only.

Too bad.

Wow...wierd how all of a sudden everybody wants to talk about spark plugs.

Anyway, what are you all paying for these plugs made out of unobtanium, or whatever....? Seems like a lot to spend for the majority of people who are running stock motors. Of course now somebody's gonna tell me it gives them an extra 10 mpg and 25 extra horsepower, sorta like drilling holes in your airbox, right.........?

well, alot of us aren't running stock engines. well, i'm not. also, all the money in the world for plugs won't do squat unless the rest of the system is up to par. i also run 8mm silicon wires, and the performance coil kit. fire is good. and to tell you the truth, i probably get better mileage, i didn't measure it before the mods, just afterward. i know the difference from then on, that's when i stated changing turbos injectors, etc. anyway, sometimes a post needs a little kick in the butt to really get interesting.

Actually, my plugs were just due for change then, and when i called the dealer, the price was that much. Then on the way to go to the dealer, i stopped by a newly-opened aftermarket shop that offers an introductory promotion on the iridium plugs, and they costed just a little less than the stock ones.

So, you can guess what happened next.

I run champion coppers in both 5cyl engines. Over 600hp and no issues. Denso iridiums are hands down the worst plug I have ever used. Huge issue with blow out and they do not handle high compression at all.

REALLY...???

Well, maybe for a 600HP car. Mine is low on horses, and slow on the road.
:)

Interesting. Anyway, what do you mean by a blow-out?

ive seen plugs pop out due to low quality threads and seal rings. mabey the 600hp motors boost presure may have forced out a plug or two. Ive seen that at drag races with hondas. Happen when the block, and bottom end was so solid that was the only loose point. :haha:

Is that what a blow-out is?

Hmmm, i've had one of the plug caps pop out by about half an inch, but i never gave it a second thought. Interesting.

Any idea what may have caused that? I mean, yeah, that being a possible loose point, coupled with boost pressure. But what exactly happend to cause it to pop out? I mean, i personally sealed the plug threads with dielectric grease everytime i take them out, and i noticed that the threads are good.

Thanks.
