97 Volvo 960 just broke timing belt while attempting to start. Is this an interference motor, and if so whats the possiblility of having no damage due to the fact that motor wasn't running and revolution speed would have been slow?? Do you think that I would be ok with just replacing the belt? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

You may not have done any serious damage but still you could have bent a valve. You might get away with just replacing the belt but to be safe I would pull the head and have it checked in any case.

if it's the 24 valve motor then it's an interference motor and will definitely have suffered damage.

Agree with BigChap, some valves are damaged, there really is no way to avoid it.

Do you know what went wrong? Was the belt change as prescribed?

How many miles? If you are mechanically inclined the labor could be done by you.

he might be lucky in that the damage might be minimal since he was starting the car. if he was driving at a good clip, that is another story.

I've done head gaskets on these engines. You will need several special Volvo tools to accomplish this. This is not for the novice. This is a nice engine but it can be expensive to do this kind of work. Go to the Volvo web site and follow the links to their book store for the manuals and for the Volvo tool store. I purchased both the manuals and some of the tools. The job was very enjoyable and satisfying when completed. When the belt broke there were several valves open and they wil need to be replaced. The valve guides may be damaged also. Bring the head to a GOOD machine shop first. They should take about .002 off of the mating surface to make sure there is no warping. Then have them repace only the valves that are damaged. They can leak check each valve to find the damaged onesl
Get back to me if you decide to do this repair. I LOVE working on Volvos.
