Hi. I have a 2001 S60 2.4T. My volvo specialist told me that a tune-up will cost around $400-500. Can I get away with taking it to a generic car service place like R& S Strauss or Pep Boys? Advantages? Disadvantages? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. what does the $400-$500 tune up consist of? will he be changing the serpentine belt, cabing filters, air filters, plugs, wires, etc. Or, will he just change the plugs, do an oil change and call it a day? find out what he/she will be doing, check your manual to see what is supposed to be done at this interval. a Pepboys, Sears, (enter your favorite change store here) is fine for a basic service. their products are not generally the highest quality, more for a budget longer lasting, middle of the road type of car. just check their tire sales and see the wear rating and the traction rating. even the performance tires last forever. now, not saying that there is anything wrong with them, but remember, your car is a little bit different than say the average crown vic or impala ex-state trooper car. those you get away with a lesser brand of oil because a tear down and rebuild is $500 while the volvo will run you $1800.00 and up for a professional rebuild, maybe $1300.00 for an engine pulled from a wrecked volvo and them giving you a 3 onth warranty. sorry for the long winded response, but two cents have now become ten cents because if inflation. good luck.
