Please help we just purchased a 94 volvo 850 it has a manual transmission. Unfortunatly the speedometer and odometer are not working. I ran the computer test to see if it was the vss. the test came back with no errors found. The cruise control also does not work. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here? We just purchased the car so we do not have the funds to take it to the shop.

number one, congrats on the volvo. second, does your abs work? is the light on? sometimes when the abs goes, the speedometer goes with it? if not, then there is the likelyhood that the speedometer gear is gone. that is not the easiest, nor the hardest fix. just a little on the annoying side. fcpgroton.com sells the little gear. now about you cruise control, get a haynes manual if you did not already, and check the fuse. good luck.

After researching I am realizing that a bad speedometer and odometer can get complicated fast when you don't know why it is bad. Is there any such thing as a external speedometer so you don't have to fix the old one something that works on satelite or anything. The cheaper the better. If policemen have the technology of a radar gun there has got to be something out there that will work as a speedometer.

for the amount of money that you will spend on an external speedometer, you can get yours fixed. expensive is not the case here. if you start replacing things haphazardly, then yes, it will cost alot. you go for the little things first, then you tackle the big one. check to see that the connections are clean, the gears are still there, etc. check the manual look at that. a used one from a junkyard will save you from opening up yours.

Are your headlights not working as well? If so, All you need to do is turn the key back toward you BARELY enough so that the lights or the speedometer start working. I have to do this almost every time I get in the car and start it.
