[B]1998 s 90 head gasket is blown based on what I am reading here from the symptons. How much should I expect to pay to have that repaired by a non dealer mechanic?

depends on what the mechanics rate of pay is? here in NY figure between 75-90/hour. 75 being the crappy ones who roam the parking lots with their tow trucks. 90 being a certified mechanic. not sure about in SC.

I'm in Asheville and had a valve replaced in my v90, dohc 6cyl last fall. That would be similar job for you. Job was done by competent foreign car shop and cost me total of $2700. Your job would probably be similar if you don't need extensive work on (machining) or replacement of head. Good luck!
