Hi all,

I've got a 240 dl wagon with 207,000 miles - drove it about 800 miles yesterday no problems. Today the battery/charging light came on slightly, flickering a bit. It got stronger and dimmer over the course of about half an hour of driving, sometimes going away completely but then coming back on in a minute or so. I got home and put it on the charger and the battery was drawing pretty good.

The battery is about 6 years old. The belts are tight.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Spencer

OK, never mind.

A simple visual check showed me that the two main hot leads off of the back of the alternator had broken off. The alternator can't charge the battery with wires that aren't connected.

For anybody else looking through this topic here, I recently had the same problem with the alt. light-in mine, a "new" instrument cluster took care of the problem, along with a few others.

This seems to be common--and I don't know if you are out of the woods yet.

I had identical problem two years ago--hard to make a good splice from broken alternator connections so my rigged splices seemed to fail every 6 months since then. Finally replaced the whole main wire with a different one, but the short must be somewhere else along the engine block because I still get the flicker. I have also replaced my cluster, but for different reasons...

I am a little bit concerned...

It's also caused by over-worn brushes and slip rings, I've found. Any Alternator with 200,00km+ on it is likely to need a repair soon, check it, and the starter motor for bearings and brushes and slip rings/commutator. The parts are cheap, and it's not difficult to do, so do it and relax, knowing it will last a long time to the next occasion.
