I read in some other forums that the only way to get the headlights to turn off is to make a programmatic change - in every position my headlights are on... there is one setting that turns the lowbeams off but leaves the parking/driving lights on...

anyway I can make the change myself?

I checked with dealers (over the phone) in SoCal and they said a programming change is required (about $100). I moved before getting it done and now the local dealer said it could not be done. Unfortunately, there are not many other dealers around to check with someone else. The dealer is supposed to be able to reprogram so that the lights (all, LB and parking) go off.

Hopefully your dealer is willing and able to do it for you.

Cheers....

These are called "Daytime Running Lights" (DRL) and they are required in many countries. However, in the US they are not required (yet) and many owners have had them disabled with a software update from their Volvo dealer. Yes, most of the dealers will charge you to do this since they have to purchase and download the update from Volvo. If you have a good relationship with your dealer, they may do it for free, or at a discounted fee.
