just had my R reg 1998 V40 serviced with other bits done to it. its a 1.8 xs. before i got it serviced it was runing like a dog. mainly the idle. if you took your foot off the accelerator it would drop to about 400 rpm and then bounce back upto 900.
the car has 197k on the clock

the problem is now, is its still doing it but its going up and down and up and down. also there seems to be white smoke coming out the back. ive not used the car in 4 months or so and i assume thats water vapour from the exaust. what could the problem be? ive thrown in some redex to try and rectify the problem.

thanks

Alex

Try cleaning out the throttle body and idle control valve with throttle body cleaner after disassembly

Hi, you were asking about the idle control valve which does need to be removed to be cleaned, using the 2 bolts mentioned previously. As for the throttle body I left it attached to the block and squirted cleaner into it and used a jay cloth to clean. Just note that you may need to crank the engine a few more times before it starts if you clean in place.

yeah i wasnt going to remove the TB, but i cannot see the valve on the engine? there is a wire going to the top of the air box, but when you look in there, there doesnt seem to be a valve.

i suppose i should have mentioned this before, i do apoligize, i was trying to follow this link!

i have the mitsubushi engine. my engine doesnt look like that unfortunately, and as im not too mechanically minded im a bit stuck. i just have an airbox, bit of piping, then traight into TB. is this right?

thank you ever so much for your time so far

sorted it out. sprayed a shed load of carb cleaner down the 2 little holes in the throttle body. about half inch inwards at the bottom. i couldnt undo the rusted screws to take the AIC off. i used cotton buds to soak up and rub inside the aic. worked a treat.

thanks for all your help mate.
