Ever since I bought my 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon (5.3L engine) the cruise control has not worked.

I have yet to be able to determine what may be causing it not to work. Below are the items I have replaced, followed by a list of what I have looked for in regards to this problem.

Replaced:
Cruise Control Relay (the cruise module?)- located under fuse box
Cruise Control Air Pump - Located under battery
Cruise Control Stalk (left side of steering wheel)

Looked for:
Cannot hear any activation of the cruise control relay
Cannot hear any activation of the cruise control pump

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check next, or a list of the other parts that are part of the cruise control system? A with many 850 problems, there tends to be common things to look for (IE. bad odometer, check the odometer gear...Starting problem, check the fuel pump relay, etc). Is there anything common to go wrong with the cruise control system on an 850?

I have not yet checked the brake pedal switch for the cruise system, but it is next. Aside from that, what other parts are there for the cruise control system.

Thanks all.

USUALLY, the vacuum lines leak, causing the issue with the cruise control.

Can you give a basic idea of how extensive the vaccum llines for the cruise system are? Or is is just 2-3 lines to inspect? Or by chance, if a leak happens to be the culprit, could it be caused anywhere in the vaccuum system?

Lastly, is there a standard type of vaccumm line throughout the car, so that one could simply purchase a roll of tubing and replace all the lines in the car, without having to try to purchase multiple lines from the dealership?

Thanks again.

5.3L ? Is it a V8 Conversion?

Haha...oops, bad typo there (although it might be fun to have such a conversion, sadly mine isn't).

It's the 2.3L

Or maybe the cruise doesn't work because half the engine is missing. :P

You know I think I saw half an engine laying on the side of the road last week. If I had known it was yours I would have picked it up.

My father actually had the engine fall out of his car once while on the interstate...that was interesting.

At least that's the best way he could describe it. It was still connected to the transmission, but the engine mounts broke and dropped the block to the pavement.

Actually yes, the diagram is in this forum. If you could run a check, i know it's a lot of the archives to go through, but i am confident it is here somewhere.

Just happened to come across this post and here is one more thing to consider.

It might be worthwhile checking the cruise control vacuum valve which is operated by the brake pedal (it is a little black cylinderical thing sitting up near the top of the brake pedal). It's specific purpose is (if you are travelling along in cruise control mode) to get rid of the vacuum if the brakes are operated and consequently the cruise control will drop out immediately.

All cars have this type of safety overide.

Therefore, if this insignicant little valve goes faulty your cruise control stops working - and you won't be able to get it going until the faulty valve is replaced.
