Thanks for all of your helpful tire posts! We too are having to replace our Factory Pirelli Scorpion 235/65R/17 tires much earlier than anticipated at less than 17M miles on our '06 XC90. We live in Portland, OR and do mostly city driving. We want to get more life out of our next set and are considering H rated instead of V rated. Has anyone purchased/installed tires @ Costco? They don't have the Hunter Balancing System, but told me their balancing system is computerized and "state of the art" and balances tires up/down/left & right all at once. They recommended H rated Michelin Latitude Tour Tires for us @ $185/tire for longer life. We really appreciate any comments/feedback!

I would recommend Nokian WR SUV 235/65R17 for your 2006 XC90. For about the same price as the Michelin you can get a much superior tire. I represent Tiresbyweb.com. I am offering a forum enthusiast discount to anyone here of $5 off each Nokian tire. I can get the WR to you for $178 each with FREE SHIPPING! Call me at 800 576-1009 ext 775 to arrange delivery. I look forward to hearing from you.

When my 2006 XC 90 AWD started making excessive road noise at about 14,500 miles and the tires (Pirelli of course) still had lots of tread left, I started looking for other reasons, and found none.

Before I traded the car, I thought I would try new tires , because I had been hearing some complaints about the factory installed tires and also some warning from service personnel at the dealership.

I had a Michelin dealer install new 104H Lattitude Touring HPB at a cost of around $200 each.....Best money I ever spent, the ride and lack of road noise was dramatic and changed the car from a minus 10 to a plus 10.

I now have 4000 miles on these tires, and will be anxious to see what happens after I get 15,000 miles on the Michelins.

Someone at Volvo should be fired for putting such a sorry tire on a great vehicle.

I would recomend that you look at the Goodyear Eagle Response Edge tires. They are good traction and smooth riding. The mileage is still not good - HOWEVER - they are the only tires in this size that offer a milage warranty. Although I only got 19,000 miles a set of 4 replacements is only going to cost me $290. This makes it easier to take.

I have a 2006 XC90 with 4 Michelin 235/60R/18.
At 38,000 miles I am in need of new tires.

I saw your post about Nokian tires.

What would 4 Nokian 235/60R/18 snow/mud tires run ?

Assuming I buy tires on the net (I buy a lot on th net but have not bought tires yet)
I would want the tires delivered to place that will mount them for me.

What do you recommend ?

Thanks,
Philippe

Just a thought here - I've got an '04 with OEM Michelin Synchrone's. They do not have a mileage warrnaty BUT do have a 6 year warranty and at 42 months / 33,000 are looking long in the tooth.

Does anyone have any experience getting them to honor this warranty ? These things are $250 + and not worth it.

 Cannot answer your question on the 'Nokian' Tire, although I bought a set of BF Goodrich tires for my 01 Suburban 3 years ago on line thru Walmart....
Tires were sent to nearest Store and were mounted/balanced & new stems for $9.95 per tire..Warranty is good for life of tread wear, they balance and rotate each 5000 miles for as long as you own the tires/vehicle.....You might get on line and see if they have other brands available..Its worth a try.. Good luck...

I ordered the Nokian WR SUV tires from Josh at tiresbyweb.com for my xc90 v8 today (tire size P235/60R18). These tires are not cheap but I wanted a good all-season tire with good snow handling capabilites since my wife spun the Volvo into a snow bank on the OEM Michelin Pilot tires that were on the vehicle. I can say that the transaction was very smooth and Josh was very helpful. He even called backed to ask some additional questions after I placed the order. I will report back once the tires arrive and I get a chance to try them out.

Just curious: will you be running these Nokians during winter, too, or will you go for a dedicated winter tire? I live in Vermont and usually mount studded winter tires for November-March driving, so I do not look too hard for year-round tires to do well in the snow. I have heard about these Nokian WR's. I'd appreciate if you could report bakc on how they handle and wear, road noise, etc.

I have been trying to find a good 3-season tire that handles well, has relatively long tread life, can go off roar on occasion, and is comfortable and quiet.

Feedback would be great! Thanks

Josh,

I wondered shether you might be able to give some insight on this question, too. I have e-mailed you recently--thanks for responding.

I plan to use the Nokian WRs year-round including the Winter (for going to the mountains to ski), but I live in California and I probably do not see the constant snow/ice conditions that you see in Vermont. I'm not a tire expert, but I can't see how an all season tire like the WR (even if it has the "severe weather" logo) can perform like a studded snow tire. I'm sure the Nokian WR will perform well, but IMO having studs is the next best thing to chained tires. I will report back on my experience with Nokian WR SUV as soon as I get some miles under them.

Hi.
I have an XC90 in the UK and it had on Continental tyres when I bought it. I needed to replace the tyres and choose Michelin. Unfortuneately since putting these n there has been excessive road noise. Has anyone else had a similar experience. I wonder if they have been fitted wrongly or if they are just not suitable for the car.

I am with you, I used them for the same reason, I don't care how long they last because I get a prorated warranty on them.

I bought a pre-owned 2004 Volvo XC90 in 2006 which needed new tires. After reading comments by other XC90 users, I went with the Yokahama Geolander tires. I've put about 20,000 miles on these tires and there's still a lot of tread left. Nice ride, too. I would definitely buy these again.

Hi Vovinman,

Just a follow up to see if you like the Nokian WRs year-round Tires you ordered back in March?
How is the ride?
How is the wear on the threads on the tires?

Looking for new tires for my 04' XC90. The Nokian I priced was about $1,000 for 4 not including mounting.

Thanks!

I own a 2008 XC 90 3.2 FWD. I bought the car in Texas and recently moved to Denver. The factory tires are Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimetric 235/65R17104H. The dealer told me these tires would likely last 12-15K, to their credit. I have 10K on them and they are wearing fine.

I was not pleased how the car handled in snow and ice once in Colorado. The "W" function helped but these tires do not appear to be all-season. I cannot tell from the tires whether they are AS. The tread does not appear to be amiable to snow and ice. My other vehicle has AS and the tread is much more prounounced and not as "smooth" as the Pirelli's on the XC 90.

My question is should I put new Michelin's or Goodyear, etc. (all season) on the car and should I expect better handling in the snow and ice with the front-wheel drive? I have considered trading in the FWD to get AWD, since the car handled poorly in the winter. With FWD, I am perplexed why it did not handle better.

Any thoughts?

I have just put the third set of Continental tires on my XC90 in the last 5 months! the road noise is unacceptable! the manufacturere has been trying to accomodate me but with no success. the car originally had Michelins but I am leary of going back to them ecspecially due to cost. The 235 60 18 tires are more expensive and have little options. I thught about the goodyear Responsedge but they don't seem to be any beeter in mileage. I just want a quiet ride. Any suggestions?

Just put a set of four 235 x 65 x 17 Goodyear Assuance Triple Tread with an 80,000 mile tread wear warranty on my 2004 XC90 FWD 2.5T. Paid $ 129.27 after rebate at Sams. 104H class weight rating.

Almost dead silent after getting rid of the OE Michelins on it with 37K on them. Good decent tire handles great. The tread wear warranty sealed the deal.
