I have a 1989 Volvo 240 DL. The back end is kind of drooping so I tested the shocks. I pressed down on the rear section and the car bounced up and down about 3 times. So, I figure I need to replace the shocks in the back. Is this hard to do myself?

It's not too hard, unless the bottom bolts have rusted which is a problem in areas where salt is used on the roads. You will need access to a flat paved area to safely jack up the car. A good hydraulic jack and a pair of axle stands help you to do this safely. A good quality 19 mm ring spanner is an essential tool for this job. A 1/2" drive metric socket set will make the job easier, but you can use 3/8" drive set.

You may need new shocks, but I doubt if replacing the shocks will fix the sagging rear end.

Most commonly, it's either worn bushings or weak springs.

Let us know what you find out.

I talked to my mechanic and he said that just the shocks need to be replaced. Does the Volvo 240 hang low in the back naturally? I saw another Volvo 240 on the street the other day and it also was low in the back.

No it shouldn't be low at the rear. Could have been something heavy in the trunk? You can fit heavier springs if you plan to haul a lot of stuff or people around.
FYI: 760s and some 900 series Volvos had independent rear suspension with Nivomat units that sagged when they failed. Since 240s had live rear axles this shouldn't happen to them.
