ok so my mom drives an 2005 S40 2.4i it has been a great car and fun to drive. however the issues keep mounting...she gets the weird rattling of something (engine esk area) at idle, has replaced 2 keys before 40,000 and now a third has gone out, ummm just yesterday my parents called and told me the key was stuck in the ignition and wouldnt turn all the way over to get it out so my dad had to unhook the battery for the time being so it doesnt drain that since the indicator lights are still on, the cd player just completely stopped reading disks and working at all....basically i was wondering for their sake, is it time to get ride of this thing? i mean often times cars can be great but when they reach a certain point things start goin wrong and next thing u know its not a $300 part its a $3000 part ur replacing so any advice would be great im just lookin out for them and their wallet. personally i say cut ur losses

I take it the car is out of warranty and no extended warranty was purchased? At that point, it is a labor of love. Do you love the car so much that you are willing to deal with and repair the problems, or dump it and get another car and hopefully not have the same issues. The call will always be yours. If you read the posts here, you will find owners who have been pulling their hair out trying to find fixes because they love their cars so much. I personally have spent so much money and time on all my cars and motorcycles that I probably could have purchased a Ferrari with a Lambo for the weekend. And still have money left over for a motorcycle, or three. Was it worth it, for me, yes. Did I enjoy the hassles, at times, yes. Other times, no. Look, unfortunately it's your parents call on this. I do not envy your parents on this decision. Good luck.

I'm currently trying to figure out what the loud rattle/vibration noise is under the hood at idle as well. If you apply pressure to the air breather assembly and housing it stops.

I'm going to take mine in for warranty work about that problem again soon. It only seems to do it when the outside temp. is cold. Once the car warms up the noise goes away.

I also have a faint high pitch noise that I can hear as well underneath the hood.

Strange stuff!
