About three months ago I replaced all four rotors and brake pads on my 2001 V40. Now when I brake, it doesn't stop quickly like it used too. I've bled and re-bled all four calipers in the order that volvo recommends, I've waited for the brake in period (it's been over a 1000 miles now) and the car still doesn't stop on a dime.
Oddly, the anti-lock brakes come on if I'm sliding or really press hard on the brakes. The brake pedal does not feel mushy but just seems like it takes a great deal of effort to stop the car. I've checked the vacuum pump and the booster and they both seem to be in working order. I went to the dealership and they said if I don't use Volvo brake pads, then the car won't stop like it should (I didn't use volvo brake pads). Has any one else experienced this with after market brake pads or use them successfully?

Hi
Not had the same problems with my V40 and have used a few sets of aftermarket pads & discs on it without any problem .

I have however had the same problem with other cars. I would always search for the cheapest pads and never bother who made them. The cheapos were poor on a Vectra and also on a Fiesta and gave braking how you described. They would also 'eat' the discs. My understanding is that the 'softer' the material the more friction it would give which generally means better brakes. Harder material can 'glaze', give poor braking and wear the discs. I also understand that cheaper pads are harder than 'originals' and it is this that makes them cheaper to produce.

I do not think your brakes will improve and it may be worth (assuming that discs are ok) re- scoring the pad surfaces to try again or risk that visit to a Volvo dealer.

Regards
