it acts fine when cold, after it gets good and warmed up it seems like it's missing or not getting the fuel it needs under load, either at takeoff or trying to pass. it's also given me a fit once or twice trying to start(once it's warmed up), but not always. i'd changed the fuel filter, cleaned and checked the mass air, cleaned the points, checked the rotor for play...i've read many posts and am starting to get lost with all the things that may cause the symptoms i'm having. any one thing that i should start with? ignition amp, coil, knock sensors etc, etc....how can i troubleshoot to rule out things that aren't the problem. i'd as soon not spend more than i need to(of course).

i spent an hour or so yesterday checking connections and such. anyone know where to get a good chiltons/haynes manual? the parts store seemed to have everything but what i was looking for.

I would try ebay for the manual- I have seen a few on there. Ther is also a Volvo IPD site that has them.

As for the engine missing after warming up, there is a temp. sensor that is pressure fit into the top (passenger side) of the radiator. According to the manual, this sends a signal to the ECU that affects timing. They are a cheap part, you could see what that does.

Hey there, I'm having a similar problem with my 760 V6. I'm having the fuel filter replaced now. One question for you. When you're sitting idle in gear, say at a stop light, does the engine "shake" and sputter a little? Mine does and it causes the car to wobble a tad. It doesn't do it 100% of the time, but it will run fine for a few seconds and to that over and over. And when I'm accelerating, I can feel the power kick in and out.

Same thing happens to my '85 740gle. I've replace spark plugs and fuel injectors for months now and still hardly any change. distributor cap and all is fine too. It's been a very frustrating road to smooth this old engine out, but by god when I do... there will be so much celebrating to be had.

Funny how having a car run smooth or run better becuz of something you've fix can brighten and make you feel better.
