1999 S70 Sedan AWD 100,000 miles
Issue #1: Rear and front headlights burn out frequently. Dealer upgrades software, problem not as frequent.

Issue #2: When I turned sharply, the car would lock up - shut off. I was told this was a known issue and a software update would solve the problem. Apparently, after two tries, the software worked. Annoying, but apparently resolved.

Issue #3: Louds schreeching noise occurred while driving down expressway. By the time I got to the dealer, no noise. Unable to determine what the noise was.

Issue #4: Check enging light starts to light up. Then, ETS light comes on. Soon after, car starts jerky poor performance while driving. Dealer thinks it is a software problem. Dealer updates software. No change.

Issue #5: Dashboard lights going out. First, light for shifter goes out. Then, light for defrost button goes out.

Issue #6: Shortly after the ETS incident, intermitent violent staggering or jerking started. Usually when trying to maintain a constant rate of speed. After flushing transmission, still occurs - dealer thinks bad transmission. Again, a software upgrade is attempted - no impact.

Question - why is a $45,000 car with only 100,000 miles on it "falling apart?" Worse, why can't certified Volvo experts tell me what is wrong with the car? And worse yet, why is it I go online and the rest of the world seems to be having the same problems? Can any one at Volvo help me?

Did you try to contact Volvo North America. Or at the least, a different dealer, if possible. is the car still under warranty or did you purchase an extended warranty? If not, maybe a non dealer cerified Volvo mechanic can shed some light on this. Good luck.

Oly,
I am a dealership tech and I can solve your problem. You're vehicle is suffering from a very common problem that volvo is aware and has come out with a recall and an extended warranty for the affected throttles. I don't know what your dealer has been doing but they should be aware of campaign 155. The campaign includes a software upgrade for the ECM and ETM at NO CHARGE TO YOU!! They also need to run the ETM test through the volvo scan tool VIDA. This test will tell them
if the throttle module is out of range in which case they will need to call they're local FTS to approve a new throttle module for you. Volvo has extended the throttle warranty for 10 years or 200,00 miles. THIS IS NOT A TRANSMISSION CONCERN. No offense but these technicians you've been going to sound like morons!! I would rec. finding a new dealership. Let me know if you need anymore help. Sorry for your frustration.

Took my S70 to the delaer today. ETS light. They are checking on the warranty. Think it needs a new throttle body. 99 with 110,000 miles. Will advise what they say.
