Hi - Need to change the battery on a V40. Simple question for anyone who knows the answer. How do you remove the front plastic 'clip' that holds the battery in place. It looks like you could 'prise' the tab away from the battery. Have tried but it does not want to budge. Does it just need more force or is there a 'special' way to remove it?

Hello,

I removed it routinely without special tools, just by hand. I cannot remember the exact movement, but the clip is quite robust, so you should not worry much. I am not sure, but may be you have to push down the part closer to you.

Ciao

Romano

Actually, you don't need to remove the clip. Just press down on it real hard and slide the battery upward and leftwards to clear the clip. I believe that's the way it's designed as the clip doesn't seem removable from the tray. Admittedly, you need to have the strength of Hercules to press down on the clip far enough for it to clear the battery not to mention another pair of hands to do the battery manouver. I got my wife to help me move the battery as I used a screw driver to press down on the clip as it offered better leverage. It's a really stupid design. I wonder why Volvo just don't use a screw to secure the clip. It would have been simplier and most importantly, non-hercules couch potatoes can do it too!

Please note that if your're having difficulties starting the car, it may not be the battery. In my case, I had difficulties starting the car for a month now, and assumed it's the battery which it is not. The ignition key would need to be turned/cranked 3~5 times before the car would start (all with the new battery). It was the immobilizer that was failing which you can see on you the lower right side of your dashboard as a blinking car icon with an "X" on it. This immobilizer is a theft deterent feature that prevents the car from starting if it thinks it is stolen, but you can see that everything else electrical works just fine. I read elsewhere in this Board that its quite common on these Volvos for the immobilizer to fail, and when it does, you can lock/unlock the car 5 times in a row to reset the immobilizer computer. This does seem to work. After doing this, my car started fine again on the first try!
