Currently have a problem that occurs randomly as it occurs when the engine is hot or cold, but it doesn't always happen.

When I start the car, the engine will start, but within a second it will cut out. this will happen even if I leave my foot on the accelerator slightly or if I try to rev the engine during the initial start up.

Once the engine cuts out, it normally takes a while to start the car as the engine turns over, but does not fire up.

Has anyone got any suggestions

My car, a 2004 C70 LPT is doing the same thing. I can drive from work to a grocery store in my neighborhood (approx. 10 miles), then when I come out of the grocery store 30-45 min. later, the car won't start.

The engine turns over but won't fire up. It doesn't do this all the time, just random. When I take it to the dealer, it hasn't stored any codes and because the behavior is so random, they can never re-create the problem. I'm taking it back to the dealer on Friday -- it was delivered "late in life" and is still under warrranty.

I am at my wit's end with the situation -- hopefully someone will post something to point us in the right direction.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a immobilizer fault. Very common on this model, a code ecm-720a no comms fault is usually recorded in car. slightly bending/tightening immob antenna connector pins and immob control module pins fix this fault. I would do this before even cosidering any further tests/fault trace as most likly the problem.

I just got off the phone with my service advisor at the dealership. It was an immobilizer problem, as raydar suggested. The mechanic found that the antenna connectors were going bad and replaced them. So now, the computer should recognize my key every time.

KUL -- good luck with your car!

I bought a new Immobiliser Antenna from Volvo and fitted it, took 10 minutes to do, all you have to do is remove the casing around the steering column and then un-clip the antenna from one side with a screw driver (be careful as the wire next to it goes into the airbag). Once the antenna is off all you have to do is unplug the old on and then fit the new one, and that it. The keys don't need to be reprogrammed.

Hopefully this has fixed the problem, but I guess time will tell.
