 To many varibles to give an answer as to why you use too much fuel..
1. How many miles on the vehicle.?
2. When was the last major tune-up.?
3. What octane fuel do you use.?
4. What are your driving habits.? Fast starts/Jerky driving/High speed/city or mostly hiway driving.??

These are just a few samples that determines gas mileage..??
Nobody can just ask why I don't get netter gas mileage and expect to get an answer without knowing more about you and your vehicle...

well, as you see i'm a new guy here and i dont really know how things work, i mean forum.

i can answer your questions.

1. there are 223K (Kilometers ) on a vehicle.
2. what do you mean by major tune up??? i just changed a spark plugs recently, if you consider that as a major.
3. try to put 91 but use 89 on regular bases
4. even though i'm young my driving is smooth and slow and its mix of highway and town.

i hope those answers will help you and me to determine the fuel usage problems. thanks a bunch.

 Not up on my conversion tables, but guessing you have over 125,000 miles on your vehicle..?? Thats not a lot if the car has been serviced when due and components such as brakes, bearings, etc., are in good condition...
Are your tires in fairly good shape., and do you check the recommended pressure at least monthly..??
A major tune up is'nt just the spark plugs..This is usually done at an agency that has the equipment to scope your engine and pinpoint conditions of many components and if they are performing as required...Not a cheap service, but if your keeping your vehicle and want it to be reliable and get the gas mileage that its suppose to, then its almost a necessity...If replacement parts are necessary, or parts that don't meet the standard, then these can be costly if installed by the dealer...
You say you try to put in 91 octane but use 89 regularly..?? Does this mean 91 octane is not always available..?? I believe a non-turbo can survive on 87/89 octane without any problems, but turbos in my opinion like the 91 octane...Don't get me wrong, it will run on 87, but mileage wise I find the 91 gives better mileage..,/
Your driving habits have everything to do with mileage, along with condition of the vehicle...Good luck and have fun in your Volvo...
