My FM reception is fine as long as 'Stereo' is displayed on radio ... however, when 'Stereo' display flickers, or is absent - the FM sound output is scratchy, slurred.

Does anyone know if this can be corrected by replacing a component in radio? Or is radio replacement necessary? I have a 1996 850 (non turbo) with basic radio / cassette player.

Hey TmBr33, welcome. I am looking into that for mine also. I also have problems with my AM going under bridges. I thought that was fixed when Reagan was Prez. I remember my parents cars all doing that when I was a kid. Oh well. Stay tuned.

Generally when an FM signal starts to get weak the Stereo will flicker. This is normal. Is what is happening to yours something different?

Actually I've had this car for 8 years now - and this problem just started a couple months ago. The scratchy, slurred sounds occur in synch with the flickering 'Stereo' display - if that makes sense. It's not the same type of static that you get when the station signal you're listening to begins to fade out as you get further from the source. This is a different sound that happens for closeby FM stations that I used to get fine.
